A PARENT'S PERSPECTIVE
What a change I have seen in my son. Over the last two and a half years I have seen my son (now 10) grow and embrace Kenpo 4 Kids. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when he would rather play with his Nintendo, watch cartoons or play on the PC… anything other than practice. But one thing is constant: after he has been to training, whether it’s on the action-packed Monday night, the technique specific training of Friday night or the one-on-one instruction of Saturday morning, the result is always the same... a little guy that is buzzing from the knowledge that he is achieving something special.
For a non-sporty child, this activity has hit the spot.
I have seen my less than graceful child, jump, roll, kick (backwards!) and co-ordinate all four limbs in an unprecedented controlled fashion. I am so impressed with the physical development and co-ordination that Kenpo 4 Kids has brought to my little guy.
But the physical change is only the tip of the iceberg. The Kenpo 4 Kids "family" is around everywhere we go, and never has one of the Kenpo kids ever walked past my son without some level of acknowledgement, from a simple "hi” to a long chat about the latest happenings in the Kenpo world (or are they talking about Lego ? ).
I must admit to being one of those parents that enrolled my son into Kenpo 4 Kids so he can “look after” himself in the school yard. But I soon realized that the more he learnt the less he would have to use his newly found skills. And keeping his “treasure in his pocket” has given him all the inner strength he needed. As my son learns more in both theory and practice I am now sure that the life skills (tenacity, courage and helping others) as well as the social development he is learning will be something he will use for the rest of his life.
